My story with Utica Community Schools began when I was a student teacher at Havel Elementary. Because of that experience, my husband and I told our realtor that we would only look for a home in that school's attendance area. I had such a connection with the parents and staff that we knew that was the environment we wanted for our children. My husband is also a graduate of Utica High School.

My daughter Emily is a senior at Henry Ford High School, my son Frankie is a freshmen at Henry Ford High School and my daughter Mary Faith is a sixth grader at Havel Elementary. My children have very different personalities; however, they are all respected as individuals and their learning needs are based on what they need to grow.

I have always appreciated the sense of community in UCS. Recently, my daughter Emily gave a small appreciation gift to her bus driver, and the driver asked her if she had a little brother and sister. I thought it was a testament to the driver that she remembered my family even though my daughter is nearing the end of her education. It is an example of the types of relationships that are created through UCS.

This sense of community also opens doors for our students. My daughter was accepted into Dollars for Scholars during her sophomore year. This is a program where ten students are annually selected to learn more about how college is important to their life goal. Dollars for Scholars is just one of the many ways UCS connects kids with the community and opens doors for them.
